Celebrating a year of successes at WTC!

WTC had a very busy year with workshops, data collection projects, council policy reviews, and a team that just keeps growing. Here are just a few highlights of what we've accomplished as a group of amazing and committed volunteers, staff, and board of directors.

44: the number of Wise Practices we currently have on our database

32: the number of new volunteers we onboarded this year

25: the number of volunteers we added to our Hot Pink Paper Campaign team

23: the number of blog posts we wrote

18: the number of WTC community members who spoke on behalf of WTC at events, conferences, and webinars

15: new organizational policies that were created this year

12: times that Watch Council released statements responding to council motions

12: the number of active board members who currently serve as directors

7: times that Watch Council waited in the queue to present to council.

7: grant applications we filled out (we were successful with 5 of them!)

5: the number of staff members we added to our team!

5: municipalities that our Community Organizer will be spreading the HPPC to in BC

4: campaigns we led on the TRC Calls to Action, removing a racist & misogynistic street sign, re-naming Gladstone elementary, and race-based data

3: workshops WTC ran on intersectionality and city issues

3: the number of websites designed by our staff (WTC, WFCC, and our internal Intranet)

1: one very successful fundraising campaign thanks to all of you!

We spent an innumerable amount of energy and effort this year to help make this city a place where all women and people who experience gender oppression can thrive. We are so proud of what we have all accomplished together and can't wait to do more next year.

WTC celebrated 2020-2021 and 10 years of leadership from Ellen Woodsworth!

Highlights included Ellen's keynote speech (watch it here), a recap of everything WTC has accomplished this past year, a big thank you to all of our donors, and the re-election and election of a fantastic board!

Thank you for coming and supporting WTC! We hope to see you all at next year's AGM.

We have three new board members!

A big welcome to Serena Jackson (they/them), Paromita Naidu (she/her), and Julia Smith (she/her), our newest members elected to serve on our board of directors.

All three of them are amazing examples of leadership, with diverse backgrounds in the urban environment, and we can't wait to see what they do with us! Read their bios here.

    Welcome, Clara!

Clara (she/her) just joined our team! She is a project manager, communicator & relationship-builder. She coordinates WTC’s research on municipalities’ progress implementing the Truth & Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action. Clara previously led communications for a stakeholder engagement consultancy, helping forecast trends in social and environmental advocacy, and co-founded a peer-learning network for women in sustainability. Learn more here.

Watch Council calls for 2022 city budget revisions

We recently reviewed the 2022 proposed city budget and spoke at Council in support of more funding for the sustainability of redress and reconciliation programs, like the MMWIG staff roles. Read our campaign lead Mahtab's speech from the Council meeting here to learn more about our position and the outcomes of the 2022 budget hearing.

WTC co-hosted film screening and panel discussion with Vancouver changemakers.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the Rio Theatre for the film screenings of Militant Mother and Jean Swanson: We Need a New Map. WTC co-hosted this incredible event with Hot Docs and our very own Ellen Woodsworth moderated the incredible discussion following the screening. It was moving and motivating!

    Come celebrate with us!

We are coming together this Sunday, December 12th from 3:30-5:30 PM at Black Frog Eatery (near waterfront station) to celebrate a year's worth of Women Transforming Cities in action.

Join us for a casual afternoon and meet the volunteers, staff, and board behind Women Transforming Cities! Hope to see you there.

    • Fill out this online feedback form by February 15, 2022 and provide input to the provincial government on how they should develop child care policy. The survey should take about 30 min-1 hour, but it is self-paced so you can save your answers and revisit the form whenever you have the time.

With the holiday season well underway we thought we'd help you check off some things on your list by providing you with some staff curated recommendations. Remember to support your small, local creators, Indigenous & Black-owned businesses, and spread some holiday cheer.
